With the intensification of climatic stresses, understanding their impact on occupational health and safety is essential to ensure resilient and sustainable professional activity.

With this in mind, Croissance bleue and Lapa-Research have carried out an in-depth study of the combined effects of climate change and working conditions in the wine industry, a sector that is emblematic of the French economy.

This ground-breaking study, entitled Clisève©, Climat et Santé au Travail dans la filière vin 2024, highlights the impact of climate change on the health of vineyard workers, and calls for collective action to preserve the attractiveness and economic sustainability of the wine industry.

Key findings of the study:

The results of the study are unequivocal: 92% of wine professionals recognize the urgent need to act in the face of climate risks. They note an intensification of the impact of climate change on their health and safety at work, affecting all stages of the viticultural cycle, not just the harvest.

▶️ Mental health risks

▶️Augmentation of work arduousness.

▶️Exposition increased exposure to chemicals

▶️Dangers linked to dehydration

▶️ Lack of information and prevention

These findings underline the need for collective action and a profound transformation of work organization in the wine industry to adapt to climate change.

Presentation to the CESE: a time for constructive exchange

The presentation of the results at the CESE (Conseil Économique, Social et Environnemental) on January 15, 2024 during the “Trop Chaud pour Travailler” event enabled us to convey three key messages:

1-The urgent impact of climate change on the wine industry: more extreme weather conditions are disrupting farming practices and forcing players to rethink their models.

2-Health and climate in the workplace: in the face of new physical and psychological constraints, the assessment and improvement of working conditions can no longer wait.

3-A future of solutions: innovation in practices and cooperation between stakeholders are key levers for transforming these challenges into opportunities.

The objective is clear: to transform the community of climate experience into a community of commitment and action, in the interests of the wine industry and, by extension, all agricultural sectors. To this end, a national barometer of occupational health and climate in the agricultural sector is currently being drawn up.

“It will make it possible to better objectivize, monitor and anticipate the impact of climate change on occupational health in the agricultural sector, while taking into account the specificities of each profession and region,” explains Caroline Véran, co-author and President of the Croissance bleue CSR agency.

Managers: why act now?

Investing in health and climate at work is not only a responsible approach; it’s also a powerful lever for building resilience and innovation. Failure to act could be costly in terms of social attractiveness and economic performance.

Croissance Bleue helps organizations to better understand and prevent the climate risks that affect health in the workplace. We design and propose concrete solutions, tailored to the specific challenges of businesses, industries and major regional projects.
